Matthew Burton Charged With A Church Killing

At the left, is a picture of a born-again Christian janitor from Maryland. Matthew Burton is also a tier-one sex offender. It seems that Bayside Christian Community employed him at the church, allowing him access to the building during off hours, enabling him to use the building as a playground, doing whatever it is that sex offenders like to do. He is charged with the murder of Nicole Reiser Bennett, who also worked for the church, and happened to be in the building at the wrong time. Gotta love those sweet, moral choices these people make! Christian churches are dangerous places.

Matthew Burton really should have been Catholic instead of born again. Had he been Catholic, he could have been a priest, and been part of a huge religious organization that has had thousands of years of experience at sweeping things under the rug, (possibly a janitorial duty of Burton's?) and could have covered for him! As it sits, he sits in jail. His mother, Bonnie Burton, actually had the audacity to approach her congressperson with a special request to get his 2004 conviction for endangering the welfare of a child expunged! Luckily, Maryland didn't honor that request.

Ok. I don't mind mentioning the Catholics again. Hee's the deal: it DOES have something to do with Catholics. It has something to do with all American Christian churches at this point in history. All a person has to do to become a trusted, card carrying member is get "born again" or conform really well and ACT born again. Those who are sincere, but not as good at acting as others are kicked to the curb. This criminal, if he had been forced to prove himself, and initiated by someone qualified to analyze human behavior instead of taken on his word and because his mommy also went to church, could have been weeded out and another person would still be alive. I admit, I pick on Christians on my blog. I enjoy doing it, it is NOT getting old at all, and I will not stop. Have a nice day.

Bad Karma is not cool whether it comes from pagans or Christians. I thought the "Lord and Lady" is all about showing kindness to all. Guess you're picking and choosing what you believe in also.

Why should I not pick and choose? And who told you that the Lord and the Lady are about showing kindness to all? While they will, no doubt, be kind unless otherwise is indicated, no lodge or coven that is REAL will initiate someone who is unable to cope with life, let alone the spiritual energies associated with the particular lodge or coven. Christians have a questionable habit of converting anyone and everyone, and a sad goal of filling their buildings with as many bodies as possible. This person was given free reign to kill someone by a CHRISTIAN CHURCH. Not a coven; not a lodg; not a happy Pagan, doing his own thing.A Christian church. And it will happen again if Christianity does not evolve.

Why does everything have to be what your religion is? Hello, there are all types of religions out here that are doing horrible things to people. Just because you are involved in a church and practice religion doesn't make you uncapable of commiting a crime.

A lot of people let their guards down while they are at church. And a christian church of the "born-again" variety near my house, when I was a kid in Maryland, URGED me NOT to turn in certain criminals because they were "working" with them! And lets not forget all those priests whom the vatican thinx can violate the law, with vatican say-so, in THIS country! One does not see anywhere near as much of this from other religions. If Christian churches want employees who are put in a position to victimize others, and whose criminal records and references have not been checked, then I do not want to even live close to one.

"Everything" is not what one's religion is. It's simply certain Christians who have taken advantage of community trust. A woman would still be alive if she had not been lulled into trusting the untrustworthy.

As a point of information, the church that I attend requires an extensive background check (done by an independent agency) and recommendations from several community members in good standing before they are employed in any way, including participation in any activities involving children. "Safe Sanctuary" is what they call it.

That's good to know. Do you suppose they would have checked Bishop Robert Finn's background, in Kansas City? Or would that have been unnecessary, because he's the bishop? Even without being around kids, (which he IS from time to time) he tampered with evidence and interfered with a police investigation. Since he has free reign of all the Catholic churches from St. Joseph to Kansas City, Mo., would that mean that none of those churches would have a "safe" sanctuary? That's a lot of Christian churches, Dave.

The UMC (Methodist) "safe sanctuaries" initiative started at the topline level in 1996. There may have been policies here and there, and each church must institute its own policies even now. The risk exists for all organizations (for-profit and non-profit) and not just churches.

Kids are much safer, on average, around Catholic priests than their own family members. (I'm not Catholic.) It's just heartbreaking when something awful happens in and around a church, because people expect to be safe there. The examples of where things have gone wrong are absolutely requiring church organizations to reexamine their policies to prevent these tragedies and stop abuse when it is discovered.

I would be able to respect Christian churches a lot more there was at least a veneer of honesty about what really goes on, and what the church is willing to do to ensure the safety of everyone inside their buildings. Also, the lies, the coverups, the insane politics, the demand for conformity. All of it. In my religion, we have problems with human ego as well, but those of us who are traditional at least remember to initiate new members, rather than desperately adding bodies to our rosters, and sometimes to the local cemeteries, by being careless. The Gods are not mocked, Dave. Certain Christians should stop doing it.
